Envelopes
such as CS19, CS21 etc, were printed up North during the war by Upham in
Philadelphia, Pa during the war. When I was first setting up my item
listing numbers I put these covers in the CS category. Technically these
were sold up North, and are part of a series with Northern states tagged "for
the Union" (ie. US50) and Southern states tagged "secession". I have put a
note under each of these covers for your information.
There are also Southern State Seal covers printed by Magee,
also a Philadelphia printer, listed here. The ones without "political
tags" were printed pre-war/early war, such as CS10 Texas or CS37 North Carolina.
Magee would reprint this series during the war with tags of "Rebels" under
Southern state seals (and with Pro-Union tags under the Northern states such as
US28, US35 etc). So use of the non-tagged covers of Southern states would
be appropriate for Southern impressions.
